• Day of the Dead/Fet Gede: New Orleans Healing Center; 2372 St. Claude Ave., New Orleans, LA; 5 – 10 p.m. La Source Ancienne Ounfo , a New Orleans based Vodou society, in partnership with the New Orleans Healing Center, will celebrate the 44th Day of the Dead/Fet Gede with a Vodou ceremony to invoke the Gede. It is soothing and reassuring to know that our Dead are not gone, that we can come together in community to honor and visit with them. In return, our memory of the Dead keeps their spirits alive and present. The Mexican Days of the Dead are the days at the end of October and the beginning of November, when the veil separating the Living and the Dead is most diffuse. The Dead come back to visit the living –children visit first, on Oct 31st, the familial adults on November 1st, and finally the unremembered Dead on November 3rd. It is the time of year when summer has ended and Nature is moving towards wintery death. In Mexico, elaborate displays transform graves into altars and thousands of candles illuminate the path between worlds and give warmth to the returning Dead. Tables are set up with food for the Dead and families picnic on top of graves all night. The Days of the Dead coincide with “Fet Gede,” the festival for the Gede, a family of Haitian Vodou spirits, who are the patrons of the Dead. The entire month of November is dedicated to his celebrations in Haiti, but he is especially honored with ceremonies during the first days of the month. Death transforms from a manacing and fearful reaper, to a comically grotesque equalizer. Abandon your posturing if you want to avoid being the brunt of his ridicule. Gede is a trickster, who stands at the crossroads between life and death. Cocky, and crude, and often embarrassing, he is patron of death, sex, and regeneration. However, he is also the patron of young children and a great healer, when there is a life or death situation. His colors are purple, black and white and he characteristically wears a top hat and tails or grave-digger’s garb and sunglasses – often with only one lens — either because he sees between worlds or in reference to his “one-eyed snake”. The traditional celebration and remembrance keeping will take place in the lobby of the New Orleans Healing Center. The event is free and open to the public. Standing behind each of us is a long line of Ancestors who continue to love and guide us. In honoring the Dead, we embrace the meaning of our own lives and open space for generations yet to come. *Please feel free to bringing offerings. Gede likes: rum, cigars, sunglasses with one lens, top hats, flat breads, skeletons, skulls, peppers, Day of the Dead figurines, crosses, coffins, coffin nails, goat cheese, goat stew, etc.

• Where We Stood: Aids and the Culture Wars Film Screening: Prytania Theater; 333 Canal St., 3rd Floor, new Orleans, LA. 7 p.m. This event is free, but RSVP is required. An RSVP via this Facebook event page will not suffice. You must RSVP at the following link: https://forms.gle/7VK7mS67MsiqKuaT9 Documentary filmmaker Valda Lewis will offer commentary and a sneak peak of her forthcoming film, From Where We Stood: AIDS and the Culture Wars. The documentary examines the continued rise of the LGBT Movement during the 1980s and 1990s. The film places into the historical record stories from the Midwest and Deep South in regard to both the political advances and setbacks of the era. Parallel and interwoven stories of HIV/AIDS are told through those who experienced and survived these tumultuous years. The documentary frames the progress of a strong but scattered LGBT+ movement in the 1970s into a cohesive national force by the 1990s. From 1986 to 1993, Lewis produced a television show called Just for the Record, which was a pioneering talk show about all things queer New Orleans. During that time, footage of local and national conferences was shot. Many of the storytellers in the film are in the original footage, providing fascinating insights into the emotionally charged political struggles of the times. The cities included are guided by Lewis’ own journey – from New Orleans (1983) to Dallas, Texas (1993), Wichita Kansas (1995) and finally to Cleveland OH (2002). * NOAGE Book Club: New Orleans Pride Center; 2762 Orleans Ave., New Orleans, LA.; 6 – 7:30 p.m. What do you do when you discover your spouse has an insignificant other? How about when you realize your own insignificant other is becoming more significant than your spouse? There are no easy answers to these questions, but Stephen McCauley—”the master of the modern comedy of manners” (USA Today)—makes exploring them a literary delight. Richard Rossi works in HR at a touchy-feely software company and prides himself on his understanding of the foibles and fictions we all use to get through the day. Too bad he’s not as good at spotting such behavior in himself. What else could explain his passionate affair with Benjamin, a very unavailable married man? Richard suggests birthday presents for Benjamin’s wife and vacation plans for his kids, meets him for “lunch” at a sublet apartment, and would never think about calling him after business hours. “In the three years I’d known Benjamin, I’d come to think of him as my husband. He was, after all, a husband, and I saw it as my responsibility to protect his marriage from a barrage of outside threats and bad influences. It was the only way I could justify sleeping with him.” Since Richard is not entirely available himself—there’s Conrad, his adorable if maddening partner to contend with—it all seems perfect. But when cosmopolitan Conrad starts spending a suspicious amount of time in Ohio, and economic uncertainty challenges Richard’s chances for promotion, he realizes his priorities might be a little skewed. With a cast of sharply drawn friends, frenemies, colleagues, and personal trainers, Insignificant Others is classic McCauley—a hilarious and ultimately haunting social satire about life in the United States at the bitter end of the boom years, when clinging to significant people and pursuits has never been more important—if only one could figure out what they are.
